    Sensitivity

The AE sensor’s sensitivity (dB) is represented as the output voltage (V) per vibrational particle velocity (m/s). An AE sensor (standard sensor) has a sensitivity of 50 to 70 dB (0dB=1V/m/s), i.e. 300 to 3000 V/m/s. The tolerance for sensitivity is fixed at ± 3 ~ 6dB.

    Single-end and Differential

General-purpose AE sensors are of single-end type. Differential type AE sensors are used to cope with heavy electric noise.
A differential type AE sensor requires a differential amplifier. Moreover, a particular cable must be used depending on the types of the AE sensor’s output connector and the differential amplifier’s input connector.

  • R-CAST AE sensor system
The R-CAST AE Sensor System is designed to detect microscopic destructions. This is a result of the joint development activities of Fuji Ceramics and Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology of The University of Tokyo. The use of an FET head amplifier and a special preamplifier allows this sensor system to achieve a sensitivity 55 dB higher than a conventional AE sensor.

In most case, the ceramics, representative new material,is a kind of brittleness material.A conventional AE sensor, used new material, was hard to delect AE,since the objects were mainly for metal materials. The R-CAST AE Sensor System can detect microscopic cracks of several μm.

  • Mounting Adapter
The AE sensor must be mounted to the subject being measured in such as way that the AE signals are efficiently transmitted, allowing the sensor to work at its best level of performance.
AE sensors are usually bonded to the subject; however, with insulated sensors where the wear plate is alumina, there is the risk of breakage when the sensor is removed. These sorts of sensors should be used in applications where they will be permanently mounted.

  • Calibration

Fuji Ceramics Corporation is the only company in Japan that applies absolute sensitivity calibration methods.

    Calibration Method of AE Sensor

Two major calibration methods for AE sensors are the absolute sensitivity calibration and the relative sensitivity calibration. The latter is applied to obtaining only reference data. This section describes the outline of only the former.

Sensitivity check of AE sensors by customer

Model REF-VL and REF10M, can be used as a signal source for simplified checking of your installed AE sensors.
